How to DIY an Early 2000s Photoshoot at Home

Anybody who knows me knows how much I love Y2K-inspired looks and aesthetics. I’ll be the first one to note that the early 2000s was a dark time in fashion (mainly because of questionable maximalism), but there were a few trends that deserve the resurgence we’ve been seeing over the last few years.

From Juicy Couture bags to airbrushed tees, there are so many moments of Y2K Fashion that I love. For my 28th birthday, I tried to capture the nostalgia in my early 2000s-inspired photoshoot.

Keep reading to learn more about how I finessed this early 2000s photoshoot at home without spending much money.

    The Setup

    Backdrop

    diy-Early-2000s-photoshoot
    Credit: Amazon

Of course, I had to find the perfect early 2000s background to set everything off. Surprisingly, I don’t own a real backdrop stand, so I opted to pin the background to the wall with thumbtacks. It did the job, but you should use your better judgment when doing this at home.

    Soft Box Lights

    diy-Early-2000s-photoshoot
    Credit: Amazon

I want the photos to feel a bit overexposed as they often did in the early 2000s. Setting up soft box lights relatively close to my face did the trick.

    LED Light

Instead of using a ring light, I opted for this dimmable LED light attached to my camera for a bright early 2000s photo feel. I knew I was going to wear sunglasses in some of the photos, so I skipped the ring light to avoid a circular glare on the lenses.

    Camera

    diy-Early-2000s-photoshoot
    Credit: Amazon

I purchased this camera for my birthday in 2020, and it’s so worth it. It’s a great beginner-friendly camera that has grown with me as a creator. I’m still using it four years later in 2024.

    Clothes & Accesories

    Airbrush T-Shirt , $17

    Layered Chains

At the time of this photoshoot, I didn’t have a name chain which would be the obvious jewelry of choice. So, I went with some layered initial jewelry instead. if you have name jewelry lying around somewhere, doing this early 2000s-inspired photoshoot is the perfect opportunity to dust them off and give them some shine.

    Rimless Sunglasses

    diy-Early-2000s-photoshoot

No early 2000s photo shoot is complete without the right outfit. I decided to keep mine very simple but very Uptown, New York City.

Early 2000s Photoshoot Hair, Makeup and Nails

    Rhinestone Bobby Pins

Not sure if it counts as a hairstyle, but my go-to in the earlier part of the 2000s was. doobie wrap. There was nothing like going to get a wash and set, having your hair in a doobie overnight, prepping for the big reveal in the morning.

To step it up a bit, I added rhinestone bobby pins to make a statement. I’d recommend grabbing these from your local beauty supply store if you can (I got mine from Amazon). FYI, I’m very proud that I could wrap my wig myself. I guess all those years spent going to the Dominican hair salon on Sunday came in handy after all.

    Nails

Of course, I went for a french tip. But instead of classic white, I opted for blue to match the overall vibe of the shoot. One thing the girls loved to do in the early 2000s was be matchy matchy.

    Photoshoot Ready Makeup (Flawless Complexion)

    diy-Early-2000s-photoshoot
    Credit: Astoldbymika.com

I knew I wanted something simple and flawless—almost a no-makeup look but more glam. Fenty Beauty never disappoints when it comes to creating a photo-ready face. The only way to complete my early 2000s photoshoot was with some of my favorite Fenty Beauty products.

  • 20 Things I learned in My 20s

    20 Things I learned in My 20s

As I reflect on my roaring 20s, I’ve come to realize that I’ve A. come such as long way in what seems like such a short period of time. B. I’ve really gained so much wisdom and perspective on just about everything and C. the pandemic definitely stole my late 20s but I try my best not to be salty about it.

Which brings me to the reason we’re gathered here today—sharing things that I learned in my 20s that will have you saying “Damn Mika, you ain’t never lie!” So, grab your cup of tea (or wine) and get ready for some unfiltered (and unsolicited) wisdom. And oh, yeah…Happy 30th Birthday to me!

    1. Everybody isn’t your friend… and that’s okay

things i learned in myv 20s nikki baby that bitch

In life, you’ll encounter all sorts of people—some people you’ll click with instantly. Some you may take some time warming up to. Other’s may down right get on your damn nerves so bad that you’ll regret the day you first ever crossed paths. It’s alright to accept that not everyone will not be your cup of tea (spoiler: sometimes you won’t be theirs either). Make it a point to surround yourself with those who uplift and support you, and let go of toxic connections or peoples that just don’t do it for you.

    2. Compartmentalizing your friends is also okay

things i learned in my 20s meg thee stallions shocked bet awards

I know some people are going to 100% disagree with this. And if that’s the case, go write about it on your own blog. From my experience its normal if each friend plays a unique role in your life. Some are your partners in crime that will hop in an Uber with you to run down on the trifling, good for nothing type of brother that broke your heart. Others may be the ones that you feel comfortable talking about things like major career and financial decisions.

Embrace the beauty of diversity in friendships and cherish the different needs each relationship fulfills. Stop expecting one person to be your everything—that’s way too much pressure even for the greatest friend in the world.

    3. Knowing how to drive is actually important

Even if you reside in the concrete jungle of NYC, learning to drive opens up opportunities and gives you a sense of freedom. Who knows when you might want to embark on a spontaneous road trip? Or you simply have to be the designated driver due to an emergency of some sort. Not to mention, taking cabs and Ubers everywhere in this economy is draining your bank account. BFFR.

    4. Take responsibility for your own issues and actions

things i learned in my 20s insecure molly accountable

Blaming others for your problems only holds you back. From my experience, people who don’t take accountability generally lack self awareness, repeatedly get caught up in the same vicious cycles and quite frankly, become stuck in their ways. It’s time to own up to your mistakes/poor decisions, learn from them, and grow tf up. You can’t keep blaming the same people and situations forever. It’s getting old and tired.

I love a good trend as much as the next girl, but chasing trends will leave you with nothing more than a closet full of clothes you’ll wear a few times, forget about, then eventually dispose of. Instead, focus on buying pieces you genuinely adore and will wear time and time again. Pieces that call your name and bring you joy whenever you pick it up. I personally get excited curating a wardrobe that fits me (and possibly passing it on to my beautiful unborn daughter).

    6. Embrace solo adventures tiktok

How many trips have you attempted to plan with a group of friends that never made it out the group chat? How about all those restaurant TikTok vids you’ve been sending to your friends with no actual reservation in sight? Exactly. Treat yourself to dinner dates, embark on solo trips, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Riding solo does wonders for self discovery—don’t take it for granted.

    7. Trick yourself into being a type A girlie

You don’t have to be born an organization guru or the girlie that lives off of a to-do list. However, with some many moving pieces in this ghetto that we call adulthood, these type of characteristics make a huge different. Implement little tricks and routines to boost your productivity and organization skills. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes. And yes, buy the iPad because it can actually help you get your life together (that’s my experience at least).

    8. Not all workplaces are toxic

    how to quit your job

Contrary to popular belief, there are workplaces out there that nurture growth and foster a positive environment. Seek out opportunities that align with your values and don’t settle for less. Yes, it is ghetto that we have to work to live in the first place (who actually is responsible for this?) but you honestly don’t have to be miserable doing so.

    9. …but don’t be afraid to quit a job

things i learned in my 20s i quit harlem series

And when it comes to a job that I don’t f*ck with? I’ma quit it. I remember writing a blog post about when it I knew it was time to quit my job. Spoiler: I didn’t regret quitting that job or any other job after that. Your happiness and fulfillment matters. If a job doesn’t align with your goals or values, don’t be afraid to walk away. It’s not the end of the world—it’s a chance to find something better. Plus, we all know that when a job is through with you they don’t think twice about kicking you to the curb.

    10. Master the art of money management

things i learned in my 20s michelle obama money gif

Leave your money trauma in the past. Stop calling yourself broke. No more saying, “I’m so bad with money.” Money has energy and the way you move with it determines how it flows back to you. Don’t be delusional and go finance a pink Tesla in the name of manifestation but just know that money is made up and unlimited—there’s nothing stopping you from getting to it except yourself.

Also, work smarter not harder. More money doesn’t necessarily mean more work.

    11. Harness the power of your words

things i learned in my 20s awkward black girl issa rae 20s

While we’re touching the subject, remember words hold incredible power, so choose them wisely. Avoid negative self-talk and reframe your mindset. Instead of saying you’re broke, focus on manifesting abundance and financial freedom. Whether you have to put it in a vision board, pray on it or create mantras, watch what you say and only speak power into yourself and the world.

    12. Stop giving everyone the benefit of the doubt

things i learned in my 20s nene eye roll

Sometimes, the doubt just don’t benefit a damn thing. Not everyone deserves a place in your life. Don’t force connections with people who consistently prove themselves to be less than worthy. Value yourself enough to surround yourself with genuine souls.

    13. It’s okay not to have everything figured out

Let me start by saying being scared to turn 30 is crazy. There’s no magical age when everything suddenly falls into place. Embrace the journey of self-discovery, learn from the twists and turns, and trust that life will unfold beautifully on its own time.

    14. Take care of your body, inside and out

things i learned in my 20s working out martin

If there’s one thing that I learned in my 20s, it’s that your body changes a lot. Gone are the days that you can marathon drink, eat bacon egg and cheese sandwiches every morning and be in the best shape of your life. Your body is your temple, so treat it with love and respect. Nourish your body with wholesome food, protect your skin with sunscreen, stay active, and prioritize self-care.

    15. Stop caring about others’ opinions

things i learned in my 20s oh irrelevant ericka lhhatl

A a fly, Bajan singer turned entrepreneur once said “people gone talk whether you doing bad or good”. Opinions are like assh*ole’s–everyone has one. Focus on your own growth and aspirations. As long as you’re being true to yourself and pursuing what feels right to you, what others think is irrelevant. Chances are they’re projecting their own insecurities onto you anyway.

    16. Silence speaks volumes

things i learned in my 20s silence

Not every situation deserves a response. Sometimes, the best approach is to keep it cute and keep it mute. Your peace of mind is worth more than engaging in unnecessary drama. This includes online, btw. Like girl, are your really going to let @UserExperiment626 really piss you off at 8 am with their lame a*s comment?

    17. Get better with time

things i learned in my 20s desus and mero

Respect your time and others’ by being punctual. Being fashionably late might sound cool, but let’s face it, it’s just plain rude. Show up on time and radiate success. Furthermore, be realistic with time. A lot of people who feel like they don’t have enough time just are delusional with time.

Bonus: Buy back time by delegating tasks when and if you can. For instance, I’m officially pro drop-off laundry because going to a hot NYC Laundromat for a few hours every couple of weeks just doesn’t work for me. For you this may look like buying groceries with Instacart or finding a Virtual assistant if you’re really about that life. Find ways to “make time”.

    18. Build a routine

Structure and consistency are legit the foundations of success. We learn this all the way up to the time we’re in college and drop it once we enter the real world. Create a routine that aligns with your goals, helps you stay organized, and maximizes your productivity + happiness. Your future self will thank you.

    19. Being single is not the end of the world

things i learned in my 20s i feel so damn powerful cardi b

As much as I want to be shouting “my man, my man, my man” from the top of the Empire State building, I’m loving how much I’ve been loving on myself. I actually think it’s making me a better person for a future partner. Love yourself unapologetically and focus on personal growth. Your ideal partner may be busy working on themselves too. Embrace the single life, indulge in self-discovery, and cherish the freedom to create your own happiness.

    20. Unfollow uninspiring people online

things i learned in my 20s lhhatl social media rasheeda

Your online space should be filled with inspiration and positivity. If someone doesn’t light your creative fire or uplift your spirit, it’s time to hit that unfollow button, expeditiously. Surround yourself with those who ignite your passion.

Life is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and constant evolution. Embrace the lessons, celebrate the wins, and navigate the lows with grace. Remember, you’re a force to be reckoned with. Stay true to yourself, live fearlessly, and keep slaying, because you’ve got this!

Drop a comment below and let me know which lesson resonates with you the most. And don’t forget to share this post with your tribe who need a dose of realness. My DM’s are open on Twitter and IG if you’d like to talk more!

These Bath & Body Works Candles Smell Luxurious AF

If you’ve never owned a Bath & Body Works 3-wick candle, first let me ask, is everything okay? Second, let me just tell you you can never go wrong with these candles. For starters, they go on sale at least twice a year, and they have some great scent profiles that can fill up a room (especially if you opt for the 3-wick candles, which I recommend).

The next candle sale for the year (2022) is likely to be sometime in early December. Based on past candle sales, they’ll likely be priced under $12. Follow me on Twitter so I can notify you!

Also, remember, when burning candles, it’s essential to trim the wick to get the best, soot-free burn possible (here’s my favorite wick trimmer). It also wouldn’t hurt to get a rechargeable electric lighter (you can find one for cheap on Amazon).

Below are the best candles carried at Bath & Body Works (that are currently available on the website)

Fragrance Profile: Rich Mahogany, Black Teakwood, Dark Oak, Frosted Lavender with Natural Essential Oils

To know me is to know that Mahagony Teakwood Intense (formally labeled High Intensity) is my all-time favorite Bath & Body Works candle. I’ll even go out on a limb to say that it’s one of the best smelling Bath & Body Works Candles ever.

If this is your go-to scent, chances are you’re single af looking for a man or a bachelor looking to impress your women friends with good vibes and smell goods.

    Marshmallow Fireside

Fragrance Profile: Toasted Marshmallow, Smoldering Woods, Fire Roasted Vanilla, Crystallized Amber with Natural Essential Oils

I’ll be the first to say sweet-scented candles are not my cup of tea. However, after hearing one of my favorite YouTubers, Arnell Armon, rave about this candle, I tried it, and I must say it smells fantastic. It’s a great fall/winter scent. In my opinion, it smells like a sweeter version of REPLICA By The Fireplace (which is available in a perfume and candle).

The gworl that may like this candle is likely into sweet-smelling perfumes like Prada Candy (available on ULTA, Sephora, Nordstrom, favorite pastime is getting her hair done, and enjoys taking long bubble baths just because…

It’s Lit: 15 Black-Owned Candles To Gift This Holiday Season

Raise your hand if you’ve ever bought someone a perfume set for the holidays because, quite frankly, you couldn’t think of anything else to get. I’m guilty as well. This is your sign to stop gifting body fragrances for the holidays. For starters, perfumes (and colognes) can be very personal. Most people are very particular about fragrance worn on their bodies, not to mention one scent can smell vastly on different people. Skip the perfume gift sets this year and opt to give your friends and family a luxurious candle for their home instead. And of course, grab one from a Black-Owned Candle Company.

I’ve rounded up 15 Black-Owned Candle Companies that you can shop this holiday season (and beyond) for yourself or anyone on your Christmas shopping list.

P.S. Grab an electric lighter and wick trimmer to really step up your (or the receivers) candle game.

[REVIEW] TikTok Girls Said Outre Melted Hairline Wigs Are That Girl And…

In this edition of “TikTok made me buy it,” we have Outre’s Melted Hairline Lace Front Wig HD in style “Jenni.” Once upon a time, synthetic wigs gave old-er church lady vibes (why so shiny yet stiff?). However, today’s synthetic wigs are giving human lace wigs a run for their money. Outre’s Melted Hairline HD wigs are one of the more popular lines of HD synthetic, according to some of the wig wizards on the innanet. Of course, I had to try it out for myself to give y’all the tea. Did I mention this wig starts at $35 (prices vary based on color)?

The details of the Wig (I’m wearing the color Golder Amber)

    Outre melted hairline hd jenni
Jenni Unstyled, fresh out the box.
    • Soft HD Transparent Lace
    • 5” Deep Parting (T-Part)
    • Completely Pre-Plucked Hairline & Sideburns
    • Pre-Attached wide Elastic Band for a Secure Fit
    • Natural Baby Hairs
    • Redesigned Comfort Fit Ear Contour
    • Heat Resistant up to 400 degrees
    • Kinky Straight Texture
Outre MElted Hairline HD LAceFront Wig Jenni
Jenni after styling with hot rollers. This was after day 5 of testing this wig btw.

I applied this synthetic wig using Bold Hold Liquid Gold as my adhesive. To flatten the top of the wig (surrounding the part) I used She Is Bomb Collection Wax Stick and an electric hot comb. To curl the front of the wig just a bit more, I used T3 Micro Hot Rollers. This helped the Jenni wig look a bit more curled in the front than it comes out of the pack. As I mentioned earlier,Outre’s Melted Hairline collection generally withstands up to 400 degrees in heat.

Does the wig tangle or shed?

I wore the Outre Melted Hairline “Jenni” “wig five times for at least 5 hours each (and once while biking with a helmet on—that’s how dedicated I was to see what this wig had to offer). The tangling was minimal. For the hair to be so full, it doesn’t tangle nearly as much as I expected it to. It tangled a bit more than a human hair wig but not to the point of knotting up. To detangle, I brushed it with a Felecia Leatherwood detangling hairbrush.

    Outre melted hairline hd jenni
Jenni wig styled with T3 Micro Hot Rollers. This is after a couple of wears, so the wig needed a shampoo.

There was some shedding but not a ton. The shedding is more than likely coming from cutting the lace and manipulating the parting, which wig wearers know is bound to happen when you’re dealing with lace.

Can you washOutre’s Melted Hairline HD Lace Front Wig “Jenni”?

Outre Melted Hairline Wig in style “Jenni”

I can’t speak for the wholeOutre’s Melted Hairline HD Lace Front Collection, however, you can wash Jenni. I filled my bathroom sink with cool water and SheaMoisture Wig & Weave Residue Remover Shampoo for Human and Synthetic Hair and dunked the wig in, repeating until the water came back clear. I skipped conditioner since it’s synthetic ( I don’t find that necessary or beneficial for synthetic wigs).

IsOutre’s Melted Hairline HD Lace Front Wig in the style “Jenni”worth buying?

With no hesitation, I must say yes. For starters, this particular style is soft, effortless, and pretty. The wig’s layers are cut perfectly, though I did consider cutting it a bit more in the front. It reminds me of a Dominican blowout done on coarse hair (the fibers on the wig are kinky/yaki textured). If you’ve been looking for a reason to try Amazon Wigs, let this blog post be your sign to pull the trigger.

While the lace is decent for a synthetic, I still needed to add a powder foundation to make the lace match with my skin (Try: FENTY Pro Fil’tr Powder Foundation, Sephora Microblur Powder). I love that I can wear it pre-styled or curl it to get it a bit more defined.

    4 Ways to “Self-Care” in a Pandemic

The pandemic has been looming over us for over a year now. I don’t even need to go into detail about how much damage it has caused within the world and our personal lives. Dealing with a pandemic has been rough, and unfortunately for us, it doesn’t look like covid-19 will be going away anytime soon.

Although many of us are still adjusting to our new norms, the mundane of everyday life has not ceased. We are still expected to show up as our best selves, even amid a pandemic, especially those of us who are working on the frontlines as essential workers.

Practicing self-care is more important than ever right now. It is crucial to our well-being that we take care of our physical and psychological health. Below are four ways I have been dealing with the pandemic blues.

    Weekly At-Home Spa Days.

    Fenty Eye Gel

I have always been a HUGE spa lover. My mom started me on my self-care journey early. When I was a little girl, she made sure I took lavender, milk, and honey baths, did face masks, and visited hair and nail salons as often as possible. At the time, I didn’t realize she was preparing me to know the importance of caring for yourself as a woman and how much doing so does for your spirit. As I grew older, I made sure to continue to pamper myself with spa days and acts of self-care.

My at-home spa days have been my saving grace throughout this pandemic. I can still enjoy a level of luxury I’m used to without the hefty price tag, a win-win in my book.  They consist of me pouring myself a glass of champagne, deep-conditioning my hair, blasting my facial steamer, using my favorite face masks and oils, putting my feet up, and thoroughly enjoying some me time.

    Journal Daily.

Writing down your thoughts and emotions have a tremendous effect on how you process and internalize the world.

I am an advocate for journaling. If you sit down with me and begin to discuss your problems I’m going to ask “do you journal?”. For years, I made it a mission of mine to journal daily, however, once the pandemic happened I caught a severe case of the pandemic blues and I was not in the mood to write like I normally do.

One day I recorded a voice note to help me express and process my emotions and I loved how relieved I felt afterward, ever since then I’ve been voice journaling. Journaling daily is a practice I recommend to everyone—find the medium that best suits you.

    Five Minutes of Daily Meditation.

Practicing spiritual mindfulness for five minutes every day helps me to stay present, remain focused, and feel at peace. Especially now, I rarely have a dull moment and my mind is always racing. Taking a few minutes to sit or lie still, breathe deeply, and just live in the current moment is essential. After meditating, I always gain a sense of clarity that helps me to remember what we view as the present will one day be a thing of the past.

    Social-Distanced Fun With Loved-Ones.

Although we are in a pandemic and large gatherings are still very dangerous, many cities have returned to some type of public normalcy. A lot of places are open at 25% capacity and observing strict covid regulations. If you feel comfortable enough to do so, grab a friend and head to brunch, lunch, or dinner. Recently I met up with a friend for brunch and our gathering turned out to be just what I needed to restore my mental and emotional health. Just make sure you and your party have all recently tested negative for covid and please, wear your damn mask.

Share this post along with your favorites acts of self care (pandemic or not).

Boss Bitch Music is the act of self-care missing from your daily routine

When Beyonce dropped Lemonade, we took a step back to reclaim our power in relationships. When Cardi B dropped “Bodak Yellow”, we got in our bag and made money moves. We couldn’t decide if we were having City Girls or a  Hot Girl Summer. Moral of the story, every woman should have a boss bitch playlist and that isn’t up for debate.
