How to Wash a Human Hair Wig (Beginner Friendly)

It’s no secret that wigs have come a long way since their humble beginnings. Nowadays, you don’t have to spend an arm or leg to get a quality lace closure or frontal human hair wig. The one thing that hasn’t changed, though, is that to protect the integrity of your wig (and your investment), you have to maintain it, which includes proper washing.

In this blog, I walk you through my go-to routine for washing my human hair wigs—a wig bath. My qualifications? I’m a wig enthusiast who has been wearing wigs for a decade now. Through personal experience and chatting with professional stylists over the years (primarily for editorial purposes), I’ve crafted a routine that has helped my wigs last.

    What You Need:

How to Wash a Wig: Step-by-Step

@mikadadiva Sometimes you don’t need a new wig. You need to wash the one you have and bring it back to life, babe 🫶🏾 #wigtok #wigtutorial #wifelife #hairtok ♬ original sound – ASTOLDBYMIKA💕

    Detangling and Prep

how to wash human hair wig

Step 1: Before washing your human hair wig, you need to take the time to detangle it. Using a wide tooth comb or a detangling hair brush, gently work your way through the hair from the ends to the wefts, aka the roots of the wig.

Depending on the quality of the hair or hair texture, you may want to approach this differently.

Severely Tangled or Textured Human Hair Wigs—Lightly mist with water before detangling to help loosen knots or tangles. If detangling curly wigs, knots at the nape, etc., it may be worth using a small amount of hair conditioner during the detangling process as well.

Once you can run your comb or brush through the hair with little to no trouble, your wig is fully detangled.

    TAKE YOUR TIME!

    Thoroughly Washing Your Wig

how to wash human hair wig shampoo

Step 2: After the hair is detangled, fill up your sink or bucket with lukewarm water. Put enough water to where the hair is fully submerged and covered (no need to overfill).

Step 3: Add a bit of shampoo to the water, gently swirling the wig in the water to fully mix the shampoo into the water. Remember, you’re essentially giving your wig a bubble bath, so apply the same principles.

I prefer using a gentle yet effective clarifying shampoo to ensure that all the dirt, oil, makeup, etc, is removed from my wig,

Step 4: Wash your wig by continuously dipping it into the shampoo water while gently massaging the hair in the direction that it naturally falls.  Avoid rough handling the wig or maneuvering in a way that causes tangles (especially in the frontal or closure area, which is already more prone to tangling),

Rinse the wig of shampoo, drain your sink and repeat until your fresh batch of water in the filled sink comes back clear after “bathing” the wig.

Step 5: If you have makeup or adhesive built up in the lace, apply shampoo to the area and gentle massage to cleanse. Remember, this area of the wig is very prone to knotting and shedding, so take your time.

Step 6: Give your wig one final rinse to make sure all the shampoo is fully removed.

    Properly Conditioning Your Wig

how to wash human hair wig silicon mix

Step 7: Fill up your sink with cold water (again, just enough to fully submerge the wig in the water). Add conditioner directly into the water and a little directly onto the wig (the latter is to ensure there is more than enough present to coat the wig when submerged).

Let the wig sit for at least 10-15 minutes so the cool conditioner water can penetrate it and soften it. My recommendation for conditioner is Silicone Mix—it does an amazing job detangling and softening the hair while also leaving it with a healthy luster.

Pro Tip—Alternatively, you can apply conditioner directly to the wig instead of bathing it with conditioner water.  However, this method will require more product.

    Boosting Shine & Pre Styling

Step 8: For shine, you can add ice to the water to make it as cold as possible. I’ve recently added this step to my wig maintenance, and my 6+ month-old wigs end up with impeccable shine, body, and smoothness.

After 10-15 minutes, rinse your wig under running water until it runs clear and you no longer feel the slip of conditioner on your fingers.

How to Dry a Human Hair Wig

@mikadadiva Replying to @kadija Both methods work well to dry your wig—really just depends on your preference! hope this helps! #wigtok #humanhairwig #wigtutorial #wigtips ♬ Can't You See – Original Version Instrumental – Total

Air dry your wig by sitting on a wig head/stand or hanging on a hanger (preferably a pants hanger with clips or wig hanger)

Alternatively, you can blow dry. I recommend using a heat protectant as you would with your natural hair.

How Can I Wash My Wig Between Washes (Without Shampoo)?

If your wig has fallen flat and you need to refresh it without shampoo/ a full wash day, try dry shampoo.

Dry shampoo uses powder-like substances (like tapioca starch) to absorb oils and excess products that may be weighing down the hair. These between-washday shampoos also have different fragrances, which can also refresh the scent of your wig if needed.

    Best Dry Shampoos for Wigs

Below are some of my favorite dry shampoos to use on my wigs

Dove Beauty Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo

    Saltair Moisture Bound Dry Shampoo

Not Your Mother’s Plump For Joy Dry Shampoo

How Often Should I Wash My Wig?

Once your hair looks oily or stiff, lacks volume and body, and just no longer behaves or styles like it once did, it’s time to give your wig wash. Typically, I wash my wigs a couple of times a month depending on how often I’m wearing them and adding product to style them.

Is It Okay to Use Regular Shampoo on a Human Hair Wig?

While things can get a bit tricky with synthetic wigs, washing human hair wigs with regular mild shampoos is perfectly fine. Furthermore, the bubble bath method dilutes the shampoo tremendously, allowing you to thoroughly cleanse the hair without stripping or damaging it.

COP OR FLOP: Do You Need the New Black Opium Illicit Green Perfume in Your Collection

I may earn a commission for purchases made through links in this post, however, all opinions are my own—YKTV.

Is this a safe space? The obvious answer is yes. I’m am not a huge fan of the cult-classic YSL Black Opium Eau De Parfum—there I said it. To clarify, I think the OG Black Opium smells great but it’s not a must-have in my fragrance collection. The slight powderiness of the fragrance is a bit off-putting for me. It reminds me of whatever fragrance my third-grade teacher drowned herself in daily or something my mother or grandmother would adore. But moving right along.

What is Black Opium Illicit Green Eau De Parfume?

    black opium illicit green

YSL came in swinging 2022 with a new version of the beloved fragrance dubbed Black Opium Illicit Green. This reimagined version of Black Opium features new scent notes like fig and mandarin for a fruity non-powdery twist on a fragrance that perfume aficionados know and love. Of course, I blind purchased the fragrance when it dropped at the end of January to see if this was a version of Black Opium that could claim a spot in my growing fragrance collection.

What are the fragrance notes for Black Opium Illicit Green Eau De Parfume?

    Price: $30 (travel spray), $78 ( 1oz perfume spray), $115 (2.5oz perfume spray)
    Fragrance Family:
    Warm & Spicy–Warm & Sweet Gourmand
    Key Notes:
    Green Mandarin, Fig, Coffee
    Top Note:
Fig Leaf, Green Mandarin, and Pear
    Middle Notes:
    Fig, Jasmine and Orange Blossom
    Base Notes:
    Bourbon Vanilla, Coffee, and Patchouli

Fragrance Description: ” Like a shot of adrenaline, this fragrance features a signature accord of black coffee twisted with luscious, juicy green mandarin and creamy fig. A zesty and unique take on the classic Eau de parfum, Black Opium Illicit Green is energizing and thrilling to wear.” Sephora.com

What’s the difference between the original Black Opium perfume and the New Illicit Green?

black opium illicit green vs original

If you have a decent nose for identifying scent notes, you’ll immediately notice the hint of fig and mandarin which makes this perfume a lot less powdery than its predecessor. Both scents overall smell pretty much the same. With that being said, if you already own the original you may want to skip the newest version unless you’re a die-hard Black Opium fan that wants to collect them all like infinity stones.

My Thoughts: Is Black Opium Illicit Green Worth The Hype?

Let me start by saying I absolutely prefer the Black Opium Illicit Green over the original. As I mentioned before, the fruity notes did wonders for making this fragrance non-powdery which is my preference. Black Opium Illicit Green is as sexy as the original but more fitting for my personal tastes. I’m all for wearing perfume whenever you want but I’d label this as a Fall/Winter/Nighttime kind of fragrance. It’s sultry and sexy which is why I wouldn’t wear it during the day or in the middle of the summer.

    Packaging + Bottle

For this Black Opium launch, YSL didn’t stray too far from the original packaging and bottle, only putting a hint of green to distinguish it between its sister scents.

Does the scent ofBlack Opium Illicit Green Eau De Parfume last?

After wearing it on three occasions, I have to say not so much. After just a couple of hours of wear, the scent is pretty faint. I’ve experienced the same thing when wearing the Original YSL Black Opium Perfume. For fragrances that can feel very overpowering at first, they become rather subtle rather quickly. I thought that this was just a “me thing” but when I did a poll on my Instagram, most people felt the same.

However, if you’re really into any of the Black Opium fragrances and want to make them last longer, I’d recommend applying Vaseline on your pulse points before spraying in order to help the fragrance last longer.

Pro-Tip: Apply Vaseline to your pulse points (wrists, inner elbow, chest, behind ears and behind knees) before spraying perfume to increase the longevity of the fragrance. You can purchase Vaseline on Amazon, Target, CVS and most other drugstores. (Click links to shop).

Where can I buy Black Opium Illicit Green Eau De Parfum?

YSL Black Opium Illicit Green Eau De Parfum is exclusively available at Sephora and YSL. You can shop or save to your wishlist by clicking the buttons below.

Everything You Need To Know About NARS Light Reflecting Foundation

I may earn commission for purchases made through links in this post, however all opinions are my own—YKTV.

I think it’s safe to say that NARS has a cult following when it comes to complexion products (the girls that get it, get). As a self-proclaimed foundation snob, I was absolutely delighted when I got a notification about a new foundation launching from the brand—the NARS Light Reflecting Advanced Skincare Foundation. I was lucky enough to receive the launch along with some other goodies in PR to test and tell you all about.

    What is it?

    Press play for on-skin swatches.

The NARS Light Reflecting boasts a hybrid skincare + foundation formula that helps display your skin “in the best light”. In other words, this foundation has skincare benefits, targeting redness, dark spots, and many other skin concerns (keep reading to learn more).

    Number of Shades: 36
    Finish + Coverage:
    Natural, Medium Buildable Coverage
    Key Ingredients: –
Biomimetic Oat(reduces the appearance of redness), Japanese Lilyturf (Supports a strong skin barrier by maintaining moisture), and Cacao Peptides and Milk Thistle (Minimizes the negative effect of blue light and environmental stressors)
    Ounces:

    Price:
    $49

NARS also expanded their Light Reflecting Setting Powders (both the pressed and loose) to now include 3 NEW shades in addition to the original invisible shade “Crystal”.

RELATED ARTICLE: NARS SOFT MATTE COMPLETE FOUNDATION REVIEW

What skin type is NARS Light Reflecting Advanced Skincare Foundation best for?

Skin Types: This formula is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive according to the product description on Sephora.com. It’s intended to conceal visible redness, blemishes, and dark spots while blurring the look of wrinkles, pores, and texture.

    nars light reflecting foundation

My Skin Type: My skin is combination but strays towards the “oily” side of the spectrum. At the time of trying this foundation, my skin was experiencing some texture and dehydration in addition to healing from stubborn breakouts.

How does NARS Light Reflecting Foundation compare to NARS Sheer Glow Foundation?

nars light reflecting foundationnars light reflecting foundation

At a first glance, NARS Light Reflecting Foundation looks pretty similar to the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation that many people know and love. Reading through the description of both, they are pretty similar in terms of coverage and recommended skin types—however, it may be the radiant finish of NARS Sheer Glow that may be the biggest difference. Also, if you were annoyed that Sheer Glow doesn’t come with a pump (you have to purchase one for an additional $6, FYI), the good news is that NARS Light Reflecting Foundation comes equipped with a pump.

Additionally, NARS Sheer Glow features Vitamin C and Turmeric for brightening and evening skin tone. NARS Sheer Glow is also available in 40 shades (compared to Light Reflecting’s 36) and is priced $2 cheaper at $47.

    nars light reflecting foundation
NARS Light Reflecting Foundation after applying one layer

First Impression: The formula quite literally disappeared as I blended it into my skin. My texture looked less noticeable and my pores were blurred.

Is NARS Light Reflecting Foundation longwearing or transfer-proof?

The description suggests that this foundation is an “all-day wear” foundation. If by “all day” we’re talking about 6-8 hours or so (the average work or school day) then yes. It’s absolutely not transfer-proof.

This is how the foundation looked after 3 hours of wear.

    nars light reflecting foundation

Below was after 7-ish hours of wear.

    nars light reflecting foundation

Although the foundation in my experience wears pretty well, if you have oily-prone skin you may find the need to blot or powder through the day. As you can see I started to experience some excess shine a few hours after applying the foundation. Also, because I didn’t powder or blot my face the foundation looked “worn in”.

My shade:  New Caledonia – D2 – deep with warm undertones, and an olive tone

    Mika’s Rating

    nars light reflecting foundation

I’ll start by saying that a huge part of the reason why I took off a half a star is because of the amount of product that you receive for the price point. If you read my review for NARS Soft Matte Complete Foundation (I highly suggest you read it after this review), you know that particular foundation, which I love, is priced at $40 for 1.5 ounces of product compared to the NARS Light Reflection Foundation priced at $49 for 1 ounce. For those like myself who may require a bit more product to cover imperfections, you may find that this particular foundation may not be the best option.

Other than the price point and size, I don’t have any complaints about this foundation. The formula is very liquidy and goes on skin-like. It also looks good when you get up close and personal. I’m looking forward to seeing how it pairs with similar concealer formulas in my stash. Amongst the other foundations in my collection, this may be the one I grab when I want to look “perfected” but not too made up.

Editor’s Note: I usually go for shade “Macao ” in NARS foundations, but this time around my color is “New Caledonia”. With that being said, I advise that you don’t grab your shade based on old NARS formulas. Swatch or shade match the best that you can because it seems like the shade names carried over but didn’t remain consistent colorwise.

[REVIEW] Rihanna Smells Like “Heaven” so she created her own perfume

Word on the street is Rihanna smells good as hell. After years of celebrities raving about how good the “bad gyal” smells, Rihanna finally decided to drop her own perfume. I guess she figured we all would like to smell like success and good vibes. Summer 2021, Fenty Beauty and Rihanna blessed us with the FENTY Eau de parfum, the first scent from the former singer’s namesake brand.

FENTY Eau De Parfum Scent Notes

“Magnolia and musk unite with tangerine, blueberry and hints of Bulgarian rose absolute, geranium and patchouli”- FentyBeauty.com.

Does FENTY perfume smell like Kilian Love, Don’t Be Shy (Rihanna’s previously rumored favorite perfume) ?

Kilian Love, Don’t be Shy fragrance profile (from Sephora.com)

    Fragrance Family: Floral

    Scent Type: Warm Floral

Key Notes: Orange blossom, Vanilla Absolute and Luscious Marshmallow

Long before Rihanna dropped FENTY Eau De Parfum, it was rumored that her perfume of choice was Love, Don’t Be Shy from luxury fragrance house Kilian Paris. If you haven’t smelled this fragrance, let me be the one to tell you that the scent is absolutely divine. It’s expensive as hell (around $195 for a travel set), but I can see why Rihanna would be a fan.

While Kilian Love, Don’t Be Shy and FENTY Eau De parfum both have sweet elements, I don’t find them similar at all. But why would Rihanna copy and paste a perfume in the first place? Duh. Love, Don’t Be Shy is much sweeter, intense scent. FENTY Eau de parfum has a unique fragrance profile with some earthy and woody elements but dries down soft and sweet with a slightly musky undertone. According to the brand, it creates a unique scent for everyone based on their body chemistry. This is a good time to mention that the fragrance is unisex, in case you were wondering.

Thoughts on FENTY Eau De Parfum (shop here)

Let me lead by saying that the FENTY fragrance smells great in my opinion and unique. I can’t reference one perfume that smells identical to it. When I first sprayed the scent, it came off somewhat masculine and very intense, but once it dries down, the fragrance is subtle—with my body chemistry, it has a great balance of sweetness and musky. It pairs really well with sweeter fragrances (especially those with hints of vanilla-like NEST Madagascar Vanilla Perfume Oil). The scent feels luxurious and sultry (major rich bitch vibes), and the warm amber glass bottle is absolutely stunning.

I recently discovered that I’m one of those people who sometimes don’t smell perfume on themselves. Initially, I thought this fragrance didn’t last, but apparently, it smells amazing, according to the compliments I’ve gotten while testing it out. Rihanna and her team recommend spraying directly to the chest to get the most out of the fragrance (they’re not wrong). Of course, you should apply to your pulse points (wrists, behind elbows, behind knees, lower throat, and behind ears) as you would any other perfume.

Additionally, I love spraying this fragrance in my hair (wigs, not my natural hair). I can’t explain it, but this scent smells particularly good in my hair compared to some of my most loved fragrances. Personally, when Fenty hair care becomes a thing, I wouldn’t mind it if the Fenty Eau de Parfum scent was the fragrance for the products. Rihanna, if this perfume launch was you checking the temperature for Fenty Haircare, your secret is safe with me.

For my chemistry FENTY Eau de Parfum indeed smells really good, but it wasn’t necessarily what I imagined in a fragrance from FENTY. While I don’t think it will be my signature scent (I’m still exploring that), I don’t regret buying it and adding it to my growing collection. FENTY Eau De Parfum is not a crowdpleaser but those who are open to indulging in something outside of their comfort zone truly enjoy this perfume. I’ve literally have had strangers tell me how good this perfume smells on me even though they think it smells horrible on them—that goes to show that it truly pulls on body chemistry.

    Fenty Parfum Body Creme

If there’s one thing to know about Fenty it’s that their Butta Drop Whipped Oil Body Cream gives a lasting glow like no other. Surprise—a body creme will be launching with the Fenty signature scent. The brand describes the scent of this body creme as “A deliciously thick, whipped oil body crème that intensely hydrates scented with @badgalriri’s iconic, intoxicating personal fragrance.” We can expect this Fenty Parfum Body Creme to hit Sephora and FentyBeauty.com on September 1st, 2023.

It’s safe to say, that if Fenty Beauty drops something new, Mika is going to try it. With that being said, myself and my sebaceous glands were ecstatic when our fave (Rih) announced the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation. I was lucky enough to have been gifted the product and here are my honest thoughts and a few tidbits if you’re new to powder foundation.

What’s the difference between powder foundation, pressed powder, and loose powder?

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Powder Foundation

Powder Foundation: Meant to replace a “traditional” liquid foundation entirely but in some cases can be used in combination. Usually comes in a pressed compact but on occasion is available in loose powder form. Ranges in coverage.
Example: Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation (of course). Also, Clinique Beyond Perfecting (one of my long-time favorite powder foundations).

Pressed (Setting) Powder: Designed to lock in makeup + keep it from shifting while controlling shine throughout the day. Great on the go for minimizing shine that may come about. Typically sheer to medium coverage.
Example: NARS – Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder

Loose Powder: Finely milled powder that is very similar to Setting Powder in regards to locking in your makeup. Most commonly used for under-eye baking to minimize concealer creasing. Typically transparent or very sheer in coverage.
Example: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder

The Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation can be used alone as a foundation, with a liquid foundation (to add more coverage) or for makeup touch-ups (i.e. fixing your makeup after putting a mask on and off during the course of the day). Speaking of masks, I experienced very little transfer when wearing this powder foundation with a disposable mask.

Comparison: Fenty Beauty Soft Matte Liquid vs. Soft Matte Powder Foundation

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Powder Foundation
Top to Bottom: Fenty Soft Matte Liquid Vs. Powder

In my opinion, the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation applies much better than the original Matte Liquid Formula which has a tendency to dry down really fast. With this powder, you can move at your own pace.

    The Verdict

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Powder Foundation

We got another one, Rih! I’ve long been a fan of powder foundation since my time working as a Clinique Beauty consultant (circa 2012). My skin strays toward oily—there’s something about when my natural oils and powder foundation link up that’s absolutely magical. For the sake of this review, I went for a full-coverage and the product delivered. No dark spots formed against this powder shall prosper.

“No dark spots formed against Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation shall prosper.

Though the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation is indeed a powder, it’s by no means dry, especially after hitting it with a bit of setting spray. If you have dry skin and wish to try it out, I recommend hydrating tf out of your skin before applying (as you should already be doing that regardless) and using a setting spray after.

FYI: I’m shade 420 in all Fenty Beauty complexion products so shoutouts to them for being consistent!

    Mika’s Pro-Tips

    • Want more coverage? Opt for a dense brush.
    • Less coverage? Use a fluffy powder brush.
    • Apply primer as you would normally. I used Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer.
    • Don’t forget to use a setting spray between layering on the powder to help it melt into your skin and look natural.
    • I prefer applying my powder foundation before my concealer but do whatever feels right

Cop or Flop | Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream

Unless you’re new here (if you are, what’s poppin’ sis), you know that I live for Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer (say that three times fast). Even with me being inside for the majority of 2020 and now 2021 going into 2022 (damn), I used this magical gloss pretty often. In conclusion, Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb is chapstick for bad bitches, and I will never stop using it as such. And now we have Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream to add to our bad bitchery.

When I caught wind that Fenty Beauty would be dropping a shimmerless version of the Gloss Bomb, dubbed Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream, I was on the fence. While I was intrigued by it not having any glitter, I also thought, “if it’s not broke, then why to try to fix it?”.

Keeping reading for my honest thoughts and shade try on.

I’m a bit crazy so I purchased every shade from Sephora (using their in-store pickup option, which I highly recommend), and here are the swatches plus my honest opinions.

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream Fruit Snackz

    Shades

    Fenty Glow

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream Fenty Glow

This shade is meant to be the OG Fenty Glow Gloss Bomb’s exact color match without the glitter. I think this color is FIRE but it looks a little pinker on my lips than the OG Fenty Gloss Bomb does (see my IG pic below to compare).

    https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsgw5KQAZ20/

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream Cookie Jar

Described as a chocolate caramel shade, it’s clear that this gloss was made with melanin in mind. This is def a nude gloss that I would wear without any lip liner.

    Honey Waffles

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream Honey Waffles

This nude gloss is literally everything, especially if you have a warm skin tone like myself. The name couldn’t describe it any more perfectly. Complete transparency—I used a brown lip liner (shade Intense Cafe from Clinique) and it made the shade look almost identical to Cookie Jar. With that being said, I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to pick up both.

    Fruit Snackz

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream Fruit Snackz

I don’t know who needed to hear this, but red glossy lips are truly that girl. I used MAC’s legendary “Nightmoth” Lip Liner to create the combo before applying the gloss on top. The centermost part of my lip is the truest depiction of Fruit Snackz color.

    Mauve Wive$

Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream Mauve Wive$

Honestly, I didn’t think I would like this shade as much as I did; however, when paired with the right liner (aka MAC”s Nightmoth). It’s perfection!

    Verdict

Okay, so boom. I’m 100% feeling this new addition to the Fenty Gloss Bomb family. The shimmer in the original formula never bothered me but it’s nice to have an option without that has a bit more pigment. Of course, in these times wearing this gloss with a mask may not be desirable. In that regard, I have to say it’s not a “must-buy right now” kind of product but if you’re like me and love applying gloss in the comfort of your own home, I say go for it, boo.

    How about that pigment?

I think a lot of us were expecting the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Cream Color Drip Lip Cream to be much more pigmented than what it is however, we have to keep in mind that it’s still a lipgloss, not a lipstick. I did attempt to layer to the gloss heavy to make the color appear more pigmented but let me be the first to tell you that’s not a great idea. Applying too much of the Gloss Bomb Cream inevitable makes the color separate on your lips. While the Sephora description describes it as a medium-to-full coverage gloss, I think sticking to just one swipe is best.

How To Make Press On Nails Last (Up to 2 Weeks)

It’s been over a year since the last time I stepped foot inside a nail salon for a manicure. At the time, I was freelancing,  broke, and could no longer justify $80+ nail sets. Additionally, I realized that press on nails have come a long way since the 90s and in walked KISS, my current go-to brand for press ons.

    What You Need

I’m super faithful to my press on nails. After much practice, I’ve learned how to make my press on nails last for 1-2 weeks every application. I must say my application process is thorough af and may help you as well.how to make press on nails last longer

Properly manicuring and treating your natural fingernails is key to helping press on nails last.

    1. Starting with polish free nails, soak your hands in warm water for 5-10 minutes.

The warm water will help soften your cuticles, making them easier to groom.

    2. Dry your hands with a towel and push back your cuticles with an orange (wood) stick or cuticle pusher.

When pushing back your cuticles, be gentle, and take your time! Taking care of your cuticles is essential, as they protect your skin and nails from infection.

    3. Gently remove hangnails with a nipper.

If necessary, use a nipper to get rid of pesky hangnails. Keep in mind that nippers are sharp, and you should take your time when using them.

    4. File and buff your nails!

Even though you’ll be applying false nails, you want to keep your fingernails healthy and free from snagging. Be sure to buff your nails with a buffing block to create a smooth, shine-free surface. This is a major key for making press on nails last longer!

Now for the application of press-on nails. I’m using KISS Jelly Fantasy in style “Jelly Baby” with the glue provided.

    5. Size your nails for the perfect fit.

If you find that you can’t find the perfect size for your nail, go for one slightly larger and file it down to your nail size (take your time with this).

Pro-Tip: Size one hand and reference the number under the nail to find duplicates in the pack for your other hand!

    6. Buff or file the inside of the press on nail (optional).

I consider this somewhat of an advanced tip.  However, it helps depending on the style of the nail (works best for opaque nails). Using a buffing block, file, or e-file,  file the inside of the nail to hels get rid of the shine and create a rough surface for the press on and your natural nail bond.

    7. Dehydrate your nails.

This is a fancy way to say remove the oils and moisture from your nails. You can use the alcohol pads that typically come with your press-on nails.

Pro-Tip: Use a nail hydrator like when your nails are bare in order to keep you natural nails thriving.

    8. Apply the nail glue to the center of your natural fingernail and not the press on nail itself.

From my experience, applying the glue this way stops you from applying too much glue, which may lead to spillage.  To make your press-on nails last long,  you need to use enough glue to cover your entire nail where it meets the press on but not too much as it may cause air bubbles.

When placing the false nail, align close to your cuticle without letting it get onto your skin. I’m using the glue that came with my press on nails.

    9. After applying the glue, apply pressure to the nail for 15 seconds give or take.

They don’t call them “press on” for nothing. This crucial step helps the false nail adhere to your natural for longer.

    10. Apply a topcoat to extend the wear of your nails and make them look seamless.

If you want your press-on nails to be unlockable, you need to apply a topcoat. It helps blend around the cuticle and make your press-on nails look more like a well-done acrylic nail set.

If you have gel polish and a UV lamp, I recommend taking that route. If not, try a durable topcoat like Essie Gel Couture .

FYI, between press on nail set’s I make sure to regularly manicure my nails and strenghten them.

From my experience press on nails adhere better to healthy nails. If you find you nails are brittle between press on sets or any nail enhance for that matter, you may want to consider taking a break to care for your nails (starting with a nail strenghtener).

Why, as an adult with whole ass responsibilities, am I dealing with something that I thought I dodged as a teen? I haven’t the slightest clue. But I know, it was time for me to get out my feelings and get into a dermatologist’s office to seek treatment for my adult acne.
