We’re right in the middle of a long winter. The cold weather can really put a damper on things for people all over the country, so it’s important that you get out and enjoy yourself whenever you can. Don’t let the winter blues get you down so much that you don’t even try to get out and have a good time.
If you’re open to suggestions, how about packing your bags for a week or two and heading out west to California?
Across the U.S., California is actually the number one state for tourism with approximately 6.3 million visitors each year.
So if you’re looking to check out the West Coast in 2018, here are some excellent things to do in Los Angeles, the entertainment capitol of the world:

Two Words: Cali Beaches
Is it even a trip to California if you don’t go to the beach? There are approximately 95,471 miles of beaches, across the U.S. and Cali is home to a large percentage of those amazing shorelines. Put on your West coast shades, grab your towel, maybe an ice cold beverage or two, and enjoy that California sun. You can even work toward your summer bod while at the beach. Though you’ll probably spend most of your time lounging in the sand and getting a tan, even an hour of vigorous swimming can burn up to 650 calories — so get to swimming and surfing.
Say Hello to Hollywood
Although getting a quick pic in front of the Hollywood sign is a must, there is a lot more to Hollywood than the sign. You can try and find all kinds of celebrities waiting in line at coffee shops, you can hit up Hollywood Boulevard and try to not lose your friends in the giant crowd of people, and you can check out all the other cool places that Hollywood has to offer.
Mingle with the locals!
The young people of California have it figured out. These are some of the most stylish, most eccentric, and most fun people in the entire world. In fact, California is the sixth youngest state in the entire country. The best part about it? They (most of them) aren’t even locals, at least native locals. Cali’s diversity is one of the reasons it’s so amazing. There aren’t just so many people from across the U.S. having fun in Cali, but there are people from all over the world. Just hanging out with the people of California can give you an entire new outlook on life, and you’ll seriously enjoy every second of it. Though the young people of Cali might seem ageless, according to the Stanford Center of Longevity, the number of Californians over the age of 65 years old will actually double over the next 20 years: from 4.3 million in 2010 to 8.4 million in 2030. Until then, this West Coast state is one of the youngest and most diverse places on planet earth.
Hit the Santa Monica Pier
Have you ever thought to yourself, “What’s it like to be one of the guys from Weezer?” If your answer is “yes,” then all you have to do is grab a skateboard and ride down the famous Venice Beach Boardwalk. Since roughly 11 million people self-report enjoying skateboarding on a regular basis, it’s best to skate in the state that essentially started it all. For everyone else, there’s the iconic Santa Monica pier. The Santa Monica promenade is a great place to shop and grab a bite to eat, and it’s only a short walk from the famous pier.
Check Out Some Dispensaries
Now you don’t have to partake in any of the activities involved with these dispensaries, that’s totally your prerogative. But it can be cool to see these shops if you are from a city or state that is much more strict about marijuana than California. People standing in line waiting to purchase recreational marijuana? It’ll feel like another world (or a dream you once had when you were in high school).
“I’m glad I got to experience the feeling, the moment, [as opposed to acquiring it] other ways,” said Sandra Jimenez, a Connecticut resident visiting Los Angeles.
“I’m overwhelmed by the products,” added another Cali trailer, Becky Filer, by way of New York.
The Los Angeles Times reports that several dispensaries in Santa Ana, San Diego, and Palm Springs opened for recreational sales in early January, and it’s giving the state an increase in excitement in an already exciting area.
“We’re making history for L.A., added a West Hollywood resident who goes by Mike C. “It’s pretty cool people want to be a part of it.”
Clearly, there are so many great things to do in California. Whether you’re doing any of the things we talked about or are checking out the Hollywood Bowl, the Getty Center, catching a Lakers game, or just taking in all the beauty of Sunset Boulevard, you’re going to have an amazing time in this amazing state.
Take a week or two or three or as long as you possibly can and visit this unique American state.
