Why I Decided To Keep A Prayer Journal and Why You Should Too

by Mika

For as long as I could remember, I’ve always been much better with my written words than my I was speaking them outloud; prayers included. Not that I completely stumble over my words or anything when having a one on one with the man upstairs, but the things that I mean to say and the thoughts that have been weighing heavy on my brain just come out so much better when I have a paper and pen in hand. Even though I hate the physical act of writing because it makes my hands cramp up tremendously, writing in a prayer journal has helped me a lot when it comes to keeping the faith removing negative thoughts from my life.

Before writing in a prayer journal, I started writing prayer notes that I would put under my pillow as I slept. I got this idea episode from the MTV reality show Run’s House (one of my favs) but my undiagnosed OCD was driven crazy by the sight of little pieces of paper scattered throughout my room. I also wasn’t too fond of people reading my personal thoughts to GOD, so I stopped shortly after.

Fast forward to 2016, I’m now have an actual journal just for prayers and it really is helpful for collecting your thoughts and getting a sense of clarity to the many things that are happening in your life.

I bought my prayer journal from TJ Maxx during a routine unnecessary trip. I love the quote on the front, the color and how every page has a bible scripture on it.

It doesn’t matter what higher power you believe it, there is so much to gain from having a prayer journal.

How To Use Your Prayer Journal

  • First get a journal; pick one that really embodies its purpose (i.e. my “Pray More, Worry Less journal is great for me because I’m a bit of a worry ward and I want my prayer journal to help me improve with that by putting more faith in GOD “
  • Write and do it often! Don’t abandon your journal; there is always something to write about whether it’s about a hard time that you’re going through, something that your working towards and need some guidance with or just sending out a prayer to someone else.
  • Keep your journal safe and stored. I prefer not to take my journal outside whatsoever because you never know what may happen. I keep it safe in my bedroom with my door locked where no one can get to it. If you don’t have that kind of privacy, lock it up in a safe if you find it necessary. Your prayer journal is not for everyones eyes.
  • Re-read and take a look back every once in a while. Some people say that you should refrain from going back and reading older entries in your prayer journal but I disagree. I feel like you should go back when necessary. Personally, I go back and read old entries when I’m feeling a little down and out and my patience is wearing thin. It often helps because the things that I struggled with and prayed about way back when , at the time of re-reading it I have gained more clarity about and have been placed in a better position because of me getting all of my thoughts out on paper. It helps to reassure me that whatever I am going through at the present moment, I can also get over as I did in the past.

I recommend that everyone no matter your religious or spiritual background keeps some sort of journal. You’d be surprised how much documenting your growth and laying out all of your thoughts and aspirations on paper regularly may help you.

Consider keeping a ‘”prayer journal” and let me know how it works for you.

I keep a prayer journal as well. I have a box of my journals and have kept one on and off since childhood. I love going back occasionally and seeing how far I’ve come since then.

Also TJ Maxx & Marshalls are my favorite places to find them too! You can get really pretty ones for like $8 or less whereas similar styles at boutique stores like papyrus or paper source are $20+.

I used to have a “morning papers” journal where I’d write down my thoughts and worries for the day ahead and then once I’d organise my thoughts a bit more I’d pray for guidance on those thoughts. I think I’m going to start that practice up again.
