#RelationshipGoals: 10 Black Sitcom Couples That Showed Black Love Exists

by Mika

I’m happy I grew up in the 90’s where black sitcoms were a way of life and not something that you could only catch during the wee hours of the night, on saturdays when you probably want to be out of the house or on youtube as a part of an unorganized choppy playlist. Unfortunately with the absence of good sitcoms, I mean REALLY good ones, kids today are looking towards ratchet reality tv shows as #relationshipgoals

Let’s take a little walk down memory lane and give thanks to the black sitcom couples that been taught us that black love does exist without baby mama drama and cringeworthy bar fights. Shall we?

Martin & Gina

martin and gina

Arguably the most loved couple in black sitcom history, Martin & Gina epitomized opposites attracting. Every Gina secretly wants a Martin to keep the laughs coming. And every Martin needs a Gina to point him in the direction of his chill button.

The Huxtable’s

Even Bill Cosby’s recent headlining in the news could never ruin the legacy of THE perfect television couple and family. The whole show in fact was life #goals

Dwayne & Whitley

After too many years, Dwayne Wayne (my fellow Ny’er) finally got with the Queen of Bougie-ville. On behalf of all A Different World lovers, thank you for humbling her.

Q & Moesha

Yes, I admit that these two weren’t the best match but it was something about the safeness of Moesha and the bad boy in Q that had me rooting for them. All college girls want a thug?…or nah

Will & Lisa

I think we can all agree that we never thought we'd see the day that The Fresh Prince took a step down from his player throne. But then again with a beauty like Lisa on his arm, why wouldn't he?

Jamie & Fancy

I don’t know about you but I was always rooting for Jamie and Fancy, even when she was curving him like a bad habit. When they finally got together, it was like magic!

Breanna & Arnez

Even though Arnez tended to sport a wardrobe that was questionable better than Breanna’s, the whole high school sweethearts who’s love made it to college thing, gave us hope. Well at least it gave me hope.

Michael Kyle & Jay

my wife and kids

This was another dynamic duo that was super supportive of one another, and super funny. I mean if I had a son like Jr, I’d have to laugh to keep from crying too.

Bernie & Wanda

For some reason, it seems like a lot of people aren’t hip to how funny this show was. Besides being funny, watching Bernie and Wanda dive head first into parenting was interesting; especially considering the personality of the children that they took in. AND through it all, they kept the relationship spicy!

Uncle Phil & Aunt Viv (original)

aunt viv uncle phil

Another classic couple that we’ll never forget. It was something about their chemistry that couldn’t be replaced (even though they tried to like we wouldn’t notice). Uncle Phil was temperamental but a great dad. And the original Aunt Viv was sassy, intellectual and of course a real shooter. The relationship just wasn’t the same when Aunt Viv was replaced.

Now did that spark some nostalgia and give you hope for the love that will eventually walk into your life (if it hasn’t already)?

Comment, why don't cha? ⚡️
