This year the Hip Hop Honors came back with a vengeance, honoring the female pioneers in hip-hop that changed the game as we know it. Among these nominees were Salt & Pepa and DJ Spinderella, Missy Elliot, Lil Kim and Queen Latifah. The award show was packed with nostalgic performances that took you back to the good ole days in hip hop but there were a few moments that were just absolutely everything.
Michelle Obama honoring the queens
When Michelle Obama, who will forever be our favorite first lady, approves we all approve.
Betty White asking folks “who you calling a bitch?!”
Betty White will always be our favorite potty-mouthed old lady and her dramatic reading of her dear friend’s song “U.N.I.T.Y.” made the lyrics resonate even more.
Queen Latifah U.N.I.T.Y. performance + more Hip Hop Queens
For one, this song should be an anthem for black folks (esp women) everywhere but the Queen taking the time out to perform and bringing out more hip hop legends got me out of my seat.
The Lil Kim tribute + fashion show
Kim was Kanye West fly before Kanye was Kanye West fly. Say what you want but Lil Kim has killed the fashion game as a female raptress. She always stayed dripping in the newest borderline controversial outfits. Sidebar, I tried dressing like Lil Kim for Halloween one year and my dad was not having it. R.I.P. to my pink wig.
Teyanna Taylor absolutely embodying the Queen Bee
I couldn’t have imagined anyone else slaying this look from Lil Kim’s debut album Hardcore. My dad had the poster in his office just like any other dude in the 90’s. Shoutout to Teyana, my fellow
Faith Evans poking fun at her “beef” with Lil Kim
I was wondering if she was going to address that, I mean we all saw Notorious…and she sure she did.
Common speaking out on #BlackLives Matter
With all the madness going on, I was a great feeling to see Common and other entertainers speak out about injustice using this platform. Kudos to each and every one of you.
